Note to moderator

This is my A2 media blog, showing my music video, promotional advert and digipak.

My blog has followed the brief given to me at the beginning of the A2 course and has let me gain new skills, for example using Final Cut Pro X for the first time and developing past skills when I used Photoshop Elements 11. I also learnt more about recording and filming videos using the same camera as my AS project.

I have a total of 60 posts, this includes 52 research posts.

Question 1

Shane
Hannah
Lisa
Shane Throughout our A2 course, whilst creating our music video, we came across a range of conventions of which we could use, develop and challenge.
The song begins with a medium close up of one band member playing guitar, the video then cuts. Here we tried to link the lyrics and visual together – when the song says ‘’alarm clock rings’’ we showed a shot of the lead singer in bed, with an alarm clock ringing next to him. This follows convention as it clearly links together lyrics and visuals.

Hannah  As the camera pans down towards the clock the video cuts to a wide shots of the band performing together, by the side of the street. This is a very bright daytime shot and we used colour correction to bring down the exposure.
We chose to use singing into camera all the way through our music video. It can first seen in a medium close up of the lead singer. This convention is a good way to connect to the audience as it is as if you are looking directly towards them. For this shot ‘’I’m going out of my mind’’ we added a blur around Liam’s head, this symbolised how he was feeling.  The video then cuts to a wide shot of Courtney walking down the street towards Chris with the band in the background this happens as the song says ‘’until she walks in’’.  We slow-mowed this clip as it shows that you are focusing directly onto Courtney, it also makes you realise that this girl it ‘Emily’.

Lisa  The video soon says ‘’when I look in her eyes’’ it then cuts to a close up of the female actors face, again linking lyrics and visuals. We added a ‘ken burns’ to this so that the camera zooms slightly and slowly into the face.

The video then cuts on the beat to bring in the chorus. We chose to cut on the beat to follow convention however, we decided to mainly do this during the chorus as we though it fit better since the music became more upbeat. For the first chorus we used a series of fast shots, this consisted of a range of medium close ups and wide shots. We think this was successful because it fits well with the genre and speed of the song.

Shane  During this first chorus we mainly used performance shots, this is because this part of the song especially is from the bands point of view. We used short clips of the female actor to strengthen the narrative. We think this was successful because without these short clips the narrative would not be as clear. We have also used walking into camera, again following convention. We think this works well as it makes you feel that you are a part of the video, and you are walking with them. We used a dissolve as transition from the shot of the couple walking towards the camera then away from the camera. This gives the impression that time has passed. We used a dissolve for this part of the song as we felt it was calmer than the rest of the song which is faster paced.

Hannah  We used cuts to go to the next shot as the song continued to be upbeat. During the next verse the lyrics say ‘and I’m on a short lead’ we tried to link together lyrics a visuals by getting Courtney to pull on a band members guitar strap. This shot was at night therefore we used car headlights to create a glow a mysterious atmosphere. One problem we came across, when filming, it was not possible for us all to meet up before 4 o’clock therefore when it came to filming it was very dark – we overcame this problem by using car headlines, this was very effective as it was as though the band were performing in a spotlight. We also added colour correction to make this shot a touch lighter as it was too dark, this made it harder to see the location.

Lisa  During this verse, for the line ‘you don’t even know my name’ we used a short close up shot of Liam’s face in the tunnel, we feel that this was a good way to show that the singer was sad and that he felt alone therefore, overall we thought this was really effective.  We then cut to a 2 second wide shot of one band member playing guitar in the tunnel, this was a really interesting shot, the silhouette could connote sadness or loneliness - something the band members may feel when they are not with Courtney or ‘Emily’ as the song suggests.

Shane  When the song says ‘I must be invisible’ we connected lyrics and visuals by making Courtney walk straight past one band member, ignoring them – this makes you feel sorry for the band member and almost make Courtney look like the villain – this is where we used Vladimir Propp.

Hannah  The song then cuts to a two second wide shot back in the tunnel, this is a short build up to the chorus. As the song cuts to the chorus a low angle shot of the band appears, we edited this so that as they jump they jump on the beat. This is followed by a series of low angle and wide shots of the band, these shots are very upbeat, the band are very energetic, our target said that the performance shots were ‘exciting’ this proved that we were successful.

The band continued to sing into camera for this part of the song, this is really effective as it is a good way for them to portray their emotions to the audience.

Lisa  From high angle shot of the drummer, the video then dissolves to a shot-reverse-shot of the couple in an argument. The location in which this takes place is where they were walking previously in the song, but this time the location does not connote romance instead it shows distress and sadness. This is a very harsh scene as it shows an argument between the couple and that it ends with violence.  We chose for the girl to push the boy first, this was challenging stereo-types as usually the man is the more dominant in the relationship but we tried to twist this and show the girl as stronger therefore creating a representation of a modern day woman. We chose to slow-mo the girl pushing her boyfriend as this emphasises her movement, we wanted the audience to realise that the girl pushes the boy first. We colour corrected this scene to make the grey colours stand out more, this is because this scene is sad and we wanted the colours to emphasise this.

Shane  Throughout the whole song, Chris does not sing to Courtney at all – we chose to challenge this convention and I think it worked well overall as the narrative is still clear, this shows that the main singer does not have to be the one to sing directly to the girl all the time.

When the video cuts to the next shot, the band in these shots look sad, this is because we tried to make what had just happened link with the band and show how all their emotions are linked. This is all done in a wide shot.

Hannah  Next the video cuts to a high angle close up shot of one band member playing a solo. We colour corrected this so that it is brighter and there is not too much exposure making it unclear. In the next cut we used the ken burns tool to zoom into the band member’s guitar, this gives an extreme close up of him playing. It then cuts to another high angle shot of the same band member, this gives an all round view of him playing, giving a range of angles and views, this worked well for the solo, as it was effective and shows off his skills. We are still continuing to use performance shots here meaning we are still adhering to the convention. This high angle shot moves round revealing the other band members playing therefore it goes from a medium shot to a wide shot of the band.

Lisa The video then cuts to the whole band playing, this is shown in a wide shot. This is only shown briefly, before it cuts to the tunnel. This again is another performance shot, like before we see a silhouette, I do not think that seeing a similar shot again is boring, therefore disagreeing with Steve Neale’s theory on repetition. We next see a series of cut as the camera dollies towards the exit, this again cuts between the silhouette of the band member and this, until it goes back to the band all playing together.

Shane  The next cut one band member finishing the solo as the camera pans up and round to reveal the others members it quickly cuts again to the whole band. The camera then dollies inwards towards the lead singer, at the same time he sings, the wide shot becomes a medium close up - we colour corrected this shot and added a mask around the lead singer so that we only corrected him, we needed to do this as his face was too over exposed whereas the colour for the location was okay.

Hannah  As the song then says ‘’such a pretty face’’ the video cuts to a short medium close up of the female actor smiling – this is a cute shot that shows that the band members are attracted to her – it also links lyrics and visuals together.

The couple seem to have made up after their argument, we do not see this happen therefore this relates to Bordwell and Thompson, because the audience do not see what happened to them during the time the band were playing.
Lisa  The video then cuts back to the chorus. During these cuts we showed a close up of one band member singing the lyric ‘next to me’ we chose to using him here as you can see the power in his face and how much this girl means to him. I think that the range of shots after this are good as they blend well together and do not cut too fast.

We used a handheld camera for some of these shots, this shows their movement and energy.

Shane  After these fast cuts we then chose to use a fade, this brings back the romance portrayed from the couple as the audience assumes they are back together again. We used a fade to bring in the low angle shot of the couple, the camera pans as they walk past a park gate and then dissolves to bring back the band. I like this series of shot because as the camera pans across the gate and dissolves, the shot of the drummer appears as the camera continues to pan, adding a calm effect.

Hannah  Towards the end of the video we realise that no band members end up being with ‘Emily’ this makes you feel sorry for them as throughout the video you think they are the heroes of which you expect the girl to go to, when in reality her boyfriend may be the hero as he wins her back.

Lisa  We see this sadness portrayed from the lead singer when he says ‘I was barking… up the wrong tree anyway’ this was shot in the tunnel location therefore it is very dark, this emphasises the sad feeling, and makes you feel sorry for this member.

Shane  The video then cuts between multiple shots, one of the lead singer in the dark tunnel then to the couple, who seem to be talking. We colour corrected this shot of the couple to make it so the couple were slightly brighter, making them easier to see.

Hannah  The couple contrast with the lead singer, as the couple look happy but the singer looks sad. Again, making you feel sorry for the singer but happy for the couple.

Lisa  In the end, we realise that the band member definitely do not get to be with ‘Emily’ and the couple make up, this is shown through them hugging. The boyfriend holds out his arms and the girl steps forward first to hug him, we chose to point the camera towards the girls face as it was her emotions we wanted to capture at the end.

Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary task?

This is our final product, the music video. The final product was a success and there was aspects of it that had to be added to our ancillary products, to create synergy, connecting them all together. The MV had a grungy affect to it that we wanted to incorporate into the products, to do this we used colour correction, the same way we did the video. Photoshop elements 11 was the technology we used to create these products, and on top of that the images we took during the filming for the music video, to again create synergy and show it is all linked.
This is the first ancillary piece. It's the digipak for the CD. This was created using photoshop and meant it was easy to manipulate the images and colours that went on it. When creating this, we had to consider all the main parts that had to be incorporated onto it, for example the bands name and title for the CD, images showing the band them self, a spine with name and date and websites, etc. These were taken all into consideration and was added to the digipak. For the main section, we used an image of the band, this shows off themselves, showing the audience who they are and what they look like, giving themselves an image. The image itself is dark and was taken during a film shoot, this links back to creating synergy and is a dark image that shows off the grungy effect more. We them added the bands name and title of the CD, for this we made the name of the band the biggest to show who they are and then the title of the CD went below, showing what it is called. When we did this it overlaid on top of the band so a layer mask was created and it was made to look like it goes behind the band. This was very effective and shows off our technology skills.
Next we created a tour date page, this shows the audience that they're doing a tour and can be seen live. It shows that they're also popular enough to do so. When creating this we had to find the right image, because with it being a long tour list, we had to find an image that shows off the band, but still has plenty of room for the text. This image was perfect for this and gave enough space to put down the tour dates, along with it showing the audience the band. When it came to creating the text, we overlaid the text, creating a shadow effect. The colour of the shadow behind the white was taken from the light in the first image, shown on the front, this makes it link and isn't a random colour that doesn't.

Question 3

Question 3 from HannahMcMinn

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

In November I researched our TA to gain feedback on our rough cut.

"We started creating our music video on Final Cut Pro X, by adding, synchronising and cutting the clips we filmed. The video is not fully finished, however we wanted to gain some feedback before carry on, about what would improve the music video. So we got a group of teenagers aged between 16 and 17, to help with us developing it further.

The questions we asked to the group were:

What do you think of the shots used?
Is there anything that you think we can improve on?

Their responses were:

17 year old female: Likes the night shots and how we used the car headlights as lights and how they were some of the most effective shots.

16 year old male: Likes the cut aways to the group and giving it an actual story(narrative) and how he liked the beginning with one of the band members waking up and pressing the alarm because it worked well with the lyrics and how he was singing as he was waking up.

This comment was mentioned by another person in the group, along with the night shots being affective as well."

This TA research confirmed our choice of lighting for the night shots and was useful. I decided that we should repeat some of these shots in order to maintain this interest.

It was also useful to learn that the TA spotted the links between the lyrics and visuals and that already, they could follow the narrative. I agree with the feedback and believe that the close up on the alarm clock is effective and i think our narrative was clear. Upon reflection, we could have used more of this feedback. I think it would have benefitted the narrative if Courtney had been more voyeuristic and flirty with the band members. This would have developed the idea of her causing disruption ' Todorov' and ensured that the TA fully understood her role.

In October I researched the TA and the influence of digital technology.

I found that:
"According to McQuail it is difficult to define a digital audience. We have to ensure that our Music video and promotion package reached our TA.

One survey recorded youtube, radio and itunes as the most common way teens consume music video.

There was an interesting Guardian article:one concern is the reluctance to pay for  music. few buy cd's yet we are making a digipak for which, there seems to be a limited audience.
"They are very reluctant to pay for it (most never having bought a CD) and a large majority (8/10) downloading it illegally from file sharing sites."

The Guardian agree itunes is popular however there are still financial issues.
"A number of people use the music service iTunes (usually in conjunction with iPods) to acquire their music (legally) but again this is unpopular with many teenagers because of the 'high price' (79p per song). Some teenagers use a combination of sources to obtain music, because sometimes the sound quality is better on streaming sites but they cannot use these sites whilst offline, so they would download a song then listen to it on music streaming sites (separate from the file)."
http://www.theguardian.com/business/2009/jul/13/teenage-media-habits-morgan-stanley

We need to consider the use of amazon and youtube. Most people have a playlist on youtube."

This research was really useful and made me consider how my TA were going to access and consume my product. Upon reflection I could have made more use of this. I took the idea of it being on youtube, because of it being such a popular site for the TA to consume music videos and even music. Then moving onto radio, which was thought about because of me choosing Kerrang as a possible distributer and them being owned by Bauer and them having their own radio station so this would be another way in which it can be distributed and heard by my TA. However, I didn't consider and include iTunes onto any of the promotional products, but instead used amazon as a distributer and seller for the song. This was another choice I had and is a worldwide known online store, however, looking back, I feel that iTunes would have appealed to the younger digital audience, where it is more well known and used much more than Amazon.

TA profile and research

"Our audience is:

  1. Gender: males and females
  2. Age: 16 - 24
  3. Sexuality: hetrosexual
  4. Regionality: Rural - there is a sense of nature and most shots are to be outside.
  5. Lifestyle: relationships, college, friends, socialising
  6. Religion & Ethnicity: any however the MV will largely appeal to only those in the Western culture
  7. Digital audience with apps, mobile devices"
This shows that my TA hasn't changed through out the making and planning of the music video and is still the same compared to later TA research done. Looking back at this, I can see that my TA will understand the narrative well, with it being relatable for the modern audience. Having this profile meant that I already knew that they would understand the narrative well, however I needed more TA research to back up this theory.

Question 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

1) construction

These images show the organisation and construction of filming the music video.
They show the organisation of the actors and there cues on when to come in during the video and what they will be doing.

This was done by playing the original song out loud so the band and actors were able to hear it and take their cues from that, then showing whereabouts on the script/lyrics they come in at.

This was key to make sure everyone played their part and came in when needed. This was easy to follow and no mistakes were make apart from one or two missed cues. This didn't delay the filming and we were able to get the film we needed for the music video.

This also shows the filming of the band and actors, this was done using a Panasonic TZ62 camera, with a tripod to keep it steady. The tripod helped when it came to panning round, this was used to ensure the shots were held steady. This was more difficult when we panned and there were some shots and pans we had to edit in order to remove any shaking. The tripod made panning smooth but i had to learn how to handle the panning in order to keep it smooth.

Upon reflection I could have incorporated more tracking shots and this would have developed the narrative further. However, we had no mobile stand for the camera and when i tried this it was too unstable.

Learning  about lighting during filming was vital. We used natural ambient lighting for the day shots and at times this created shadows on the band's faces. Therefore we had to consider the settings in the camera, time of day and the position of our equipment. I also had to consider timings for filming as the video was shot in winter and the light began to change and dim quickly after 3pm.

Final Cut Pro X was a new technology I used when making the music video. This meant I created new skills towards making the video and learning the techniques needed to do it. These screenshots show the different functions that were used in the making, this includes using a cross dissolve. This is a transition that is soft and not as harsh as a cut. This works well with the point in the music video where it was less aggressive and more romantic.

Another tool used was markers which were used to mark down points in the song so I could it match up with the corresponding video clip. Doing this made sure the lip syncing was correct and made it look professional.

2)Research

When it came to researching for the music video and ancillaries I used a wide range of technologies for it. The first main piece of technology was blogger, this was used to present my research and show what I had found out. I could present and annotate what I had found out, for example music video research and digipak research that was done later on. I used it through out the course of the task and was even used when it came to my AS project.

The next piece of technology I used was Youtube, this was used to research existing music videos and how this could influence me in what I could include in my own music video. This helped me a lot through out even past the research stage, this is because I was able to publish my music video onto it so it could easily be put onto my blog and show the change and development through out the making.

When researching ideas for my ancillary tasks and video itself, I used the official pages of the original band itself, this was to help aid in synergy and what I could include. Along with the official band page, I even looked at official music website pages, for when it came to researching publishers and distributers for my MV. When it came to researching this, I had to consider the TA and genre of the MV, this is because some companies focus on specific genres than a wide range, however Bauer is a massive media corporation with smaller music companies, such as Kerrang, which is the one I chose, because of it's focus on the rock, pop and punk music genre.

As well as the official websites, I looked at magazines to get aid in what to include in my ancillaries. Doing this gave me official products and not other students work, if I searched online. It also shows that these are successful, because of them being in official magazines. Looking at magazines showed a ranged of different adverts to promote the band and CD, they all showed similar qualities and what I should include on my own. It gave me a range of different ideas of what to include, such as a use of layering words to create a show effect and using lines to break it up and help it focus on specific parts of the poster. As well as using magazines to help with the poster, I used the internet to look into existing digipaks. This was very useful and showed both digipak designs and the existing artists ones. This helped a lot and gave me a range of ideas that aided my decisions. Along with looking at the internet for ideas, I was able to look at digipaks from music magazines, this was very useful and again helped my decisions. I feel that doing this research was useful and without it, I couldn't achieve the quality standard of my final design.

As well as using youtube to look at existing music videos to gain ideas, I also used a camera to help gain location ideas and where I would be able to film. This helped and the locations researched were used when it came to filming the MV.

Planning

To help with planning, I used Celtx, this was useful because I could use it to create storyboards for what I'm planning to do for the filming of the music video. I used Celtx when the band were first performing, this helped give ideas and what kind of setting they would be best in, along with costumes. This helped, because it gave me ideas on what to include in the filming of the MV, and on what can be included in the ancillary tasks as well.

Microsoft was useful for when it came to creating production breakdowns, this was very useful, because it meant I could create a breakdown of the planned shoot and what will happen during that day of filming. It was simple but needed, this was so the actor knew their parts and what will be expected for them to do and their places in the shoot during that day.

The most important piece of technology was the camera used, which was a Panasonic TZ62 camera. This was needed so we were able to get our filming. The camera allowed me to capture what was needed for editing along with images for the advert and digipak, as well as behind the scenes footage and images to show how it as done and the layout of the filming.

When it came to creating the actual MV, I used Final Cut Pro X, which was a new piece of technology for me at A2 and was hard to get my head around at first. This was due to the many tools that was used during the process. To help with using Final Cut, I also used an external hard drive, this was to support the software when creating the video, stopping it from crashing. This was needed and helped when creating the video. Final Cut also helped when trying to create synergy, so I could link it to the ancillary tasks, it also meant I could create affects that wouldn't have been possible with just the camera, making it look more professional.

After creating the video on Final Cut, I moved onto creating my advert and digipak, this was done using Photoshop Elements 11, which I was more confident on than Final Cut, due to it being used in the previous project. I was able to create drafts and develop my ancillaries further, changing it to suit both the TA and the actually MV move. Creating synergy between each piece and linking them together by doing this.

Evaluation
